Anders P Håkansson is a Professor and Research Team Manager at Lund University's Faculty of Medicine, Department of Experimental Infection Medicine in Malmö. He holds multiple affiliations including as a Research Project Participant with SEBRA Sepsis and Bacterial Resistance Alliance, Professor with EpiHealth: Epidemiology for Health, and as an Affiliated Researcher and Project Coordinator with Infect@LU. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
Dr. Håkansson's research focuses on understanding host-pathogen interactions with emphasis on respiratory pathogens. His laboratory investigates biofilm formation during bacterial colonization, the role of respiratory microbiota in modulating pathogen behavior, and host inflammatory responses associated with colonization and infection. A key area of his research involves studying the direct bactericidal activity of HAMLET (a human milk protein-lipid complex) against various bacterial species and its adjuvant activity in sensitizing bacteria to antibiotics. His work spans multiple disciplines including microbiology, immunology, and infectious medicine with specific focus on Streptococci, Staphylococci, biofilms, respiratory diseases, otitis media, pneumonia, sepsis, and antibiotic resistance.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals consistent research themes centered on bacterial biofilm dynamics, host-pathogen interactions, and novel therapeutic approaches against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. His work frequently examines Streptococcus pneumoniae and other respiratory pathogens, with increasing focus on the therapeutic potential of HAMLET and related compounds. The research demonstrates strong translational potential for developing vaccines and therapeutic strategies against bacterial infections.
Dr. Håkansson serves on editorial boards for several prestigious journals including PLoS Pathogens (Associate Editor since 2021), Frontiers in Microbiology (Editorial Board Member since 2020), Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology (Associate Editor since 2020), The Journal of Infectious Diseases (Editorial Board Member since 2014), and Infection and Immunity (Editorial Board Member since 2010). His work has been referenced in Wikipedia pages, Facebook pages, and widely shared on academic platforms like Mendeley.
He currently supervises multiple doctoral students including Jakobsson, J., Wrighton, S., and André, O., and serves as Assistant Supervisor on several dissertation projects. His active research projects include 'The role of the normal flora in preventing respiratory infections and antibiotic resistance spread' funded by the Swedish Research Council (2022-2026), and 'Diagnostic derivation and verification trial on biomarkers for ventilator-associated pneumonia' with The Royal Physiographic Society in Lund (2021-2025).
Dr. Håkansson leads the Experimental Infection Medicine research team in Malmö, which maintains strong collaborations across multiple institutions. His laboratory work integrates molecular microbiology, immunology, and translational research approaches to address the growing challenge of antibiotic resistance. The team's research has significant implications for developing novel preventive and therapeutic strategies against bacterial infections, particularly in the context of respiratory diseases.
