Anders Hallberg is a Professor at Uppsala University's Department of Medicinal Chemistry, within the Faculty of Pharmacy. He received his PhD from Lund University in 1980 and has been a full professor at Uppsala University since 1990. His research focuses on identifying novel low molecular weight ligands for pharmaceutical targets such as proteases and GPCRs, with a particular emphasis on the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and viral infections like HIV and HCV.
His work has led to the development of key compounds, including the HCV NS3 protease inhibitor simeprevir (Olysio), commercialized in collaboration with Medivir AB and Johnson & Johnson. Another major discovery is the AT2R agonist C21 (buloxibutid), now under clinical evaluation by Vicore Pharma AB, a company he co-founded.
He previously served as Vice-Chancellor/President of Uppsala University from 2006. He is also an Honorary Doctor at Uppsala University's Faculty of Pharmacy. His laboratory has pioneered efficient transition metal-catalyzed reactions, particularly palladium-catalyzed C-C bond formation, advancing small molecule drug synthesis.
