Ancret Szpak is a Research Fellow at the University of South Australia (UniSA), primarily affiliated with the School of Psychology, Social Work and Social Policy and the Behaviour-Brain-Body Research Centre. He also collaborates with the Cognitive Ageing and Impairment Neurosciences laboratory (CAIN), Sleep and Chronobiology laboratory (SCL), Australian Research Centre for Interactive and Virtual Environments (IVE), and the Centre for Change and Complexity in Learning (C3L). His research focuses on the safe use of virtual reality (VR) technologies, transferability of real-world skills from VR/AR training, and psychophysiological sensor applications. He supervises Honours and PhD students and has contributed to studies on VR-induced cybersickness, skill transfer in sports, and VR applications for individuals with intellectual disabilities. His work bridges cognitive neuroscience, health sciences, and technology to address clinical and societal challenges.
Key research interests include the impact of VR on attention, perception, and cognitive processes, particularly in social and clinical contexts. He has explored the effects of interpersonal proximity on spatial attention and the design of immersive environments for therapeutic and educational purposes. His findings have implications for improving VR safety, enhancing skill acquisition, and aiding individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders.
Ancret’s collaborations span interdisciplinary teams and institutions, emphasizing practical applications of VR in healthcare, education, and rehabilitation. His contributions to peer-reviewed journals highlight advancements in understanding VR’s psychological and physiological effects, as well as its potential to foster independent living skills among marginalized populations.
