Anaïs Marshall is a Lecturer in the Department of Geography at the University of Toulouse-Jean Jaurès, affiliated with the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Solidarity, Societies, Territories (LISST) and the Multidisciplinary Institute for Studies on the Americas in Toulouse (IPEAT). She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses including Geography Methodology, Development and Globalization, Field Practices, and Rural Studies across multiple programs.
Her research examines contemporary ruralities through the lens of globalized margins, landscape dynamics, and farmers' strategies in South America (Peru, Argentina) and France. Using multi-method approaches including field observations, photography, interviews, geomatics, and spatial analysis, she investigates socio-environmental transformations at multiple scales. Key research areas include oasis systems, agricultural globalization, water management, and the application of visual methods in geographical research.
Marshall's recent publications demonstrate strong thematic continuity in studying Peruvian coastal valleys, Andean foothills agriculture, and socio-spatial mutations. Her work frequently combines theoretical frameworks from human geography with empirical field research, particularly focusing on irrigation systems, territorial development, and the impacts of globalization on rural communities. She has made significant contributions to understanding how photographic analysis can enhance geographical research.
She co-manages the "On the Image" section of Echo Géo magazine and co-organizes doctoral seminars on society, images, and sounds. Current research projects include AVALSUD, Photo-geo-graphy (with photographer Jean Larive), European Extractivist Revival, Paléficat, Gleaning, and Perimarge which examines peripheries and margins in globalization contexts.
Marshall completed her doctoral research at Panthéon-Sorbonne University - Paris I with a thesis on desert appropriation and socio-environmental dynamics in Peruvian coastal oases. Her academic work bridges theoretical geography with practical applications in rural development and territorial planning.
