Anawana Haloba is an Associate Professor of Contemporary Art at the Academy of Fine Art, University of Oslo, currently on leave. She works in Oslo and Livingstone, Zambia, with a practice spanning moving image, installation, and sound art.
- Education: Evelyn Hone College of Applied Arts (Zambia), National Academy of Arts Oslo (BA, 2006), Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (Amsterdam)
- Current PhD candidate at KMD, University of Bergen
Her research focuses on epistemologically oppressed knowledges and technologies, using listening and oral methodologies to activate repair and opacity. She explores nonlinear, nonhierarchical frameworks for understanding material culture and contemporary subjectivities through performative artworks rooted in poetry and critical theory.
Haloba co-founded the Livingstone Office for Contemporary Arts (LoCA) in 2014, a non-profit platform addressing colonial legacies, social histories, and language in contemporary art. Her artistic practice interrogates post-independence frameworks and interconnected global traumas/affections via installation, sound, and moving image.
- Scientific Awards: Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship
She advocates pedagogy blending theory, film, and music to foster cosmological understanding and accessible creativity in art practices. Her teaching emphasizes critical thinking and dismantling singular narratives through collective processes.
