Dr. Anastasia Valassopoulos is a Senior Lecturer in Post-1945 Postcolonial World Literatures in English at The University of Manchester's School of Arts, Languages and Cultures. She specializes in Middle Eastern and North African postcolonial literature, Arab women's film/music, and revolutionary cinema. Her research spans Palestinian resistance narratives, Egyptian revolutionary music, and Arab diasporic writing. Currently holds a British Academy Senior Research Fellowship for the project 'Palestine in the Popular Imagination.'
Her work explores intersections between culture and politics, with notable contributions to Feminist Theory and Journal of Postcolonial Writing. She co-edited special issues on 'Arab Feminism' and 'Responses to the War on Terror,' and has authored books including Contemporary Arab Women Writers (2007). Supervises PhD students researching topics like Palestinian cinema, feminist film theory, and postcolonial translation studies.
Her recent projects analyze transnational cultural production, focusing on how Palestine is represented in global popular culture through films, music, and literature. She serves as Associate Editor for Contemporary Women's Writing and Journal of Postcolonial Writing.
