Anastasia Doikou

Anastasia Doikou is a Professor of Mathematics at the School of Mathematical & Computer Sciences, Heriot-Watt University, and a member of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Edinburgh. She holds a prominent role as the convener of the Mathematical Physics Group within the Department of Mathematics. Previously, she served as Director of Research (Associate Executive Dean of Research) in her school from 2019-2022. Her academic journey includes a BSc in Physics from the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens and a PhD in Theoretical Physics from the University of Miami (1999). Postdoctoral positions spanned institutions such as Durham University, the University of York (via an EPSRC Fellowship), LAPTH-Annecy, and the University of Bologna before her tenure at Heriot-Watt since 2013.

Her research focuses on quantum and classical integrable systems, quantum algebras, Yang-Baxter and reflection equations, and their applications. She explores topics such as integrable quantum spin chains, Bethe ansatz techniques, braid groups, Temperley-Lieb algebras, and soliton solutions in integrable PDEs. Her work bridges algebraic structures (e.g., braces, quandles) with integrability, emphasizing their role in non-local and non-commutative systems.

Her publications from 2022–2025 highlight advancements in algebraic solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation using braces and skew braces, parametric approaches to reflection and set-theoretic equations, and explorations of quantum group symmetries. These contributions underscore her expertise in connecting abstract algebraic frameworks with integrable models in mathematical physics.
