Ananyo Maitra

Ananyo Maitra is a Research Fellow at the Laboratoire de Physique Théorique et Modélisation (LPTM) at CY Cergy Paris University, affiliated with the TALENT program. He delivered a guest lecture on “Time Liquid Crystals” for CY Advanced Studies on May 24, 2022.

His research centers on active systems—systems converting sustained energy into work—using statistical mechanics to analyze collective behavior across intracellular media, tissues, bacterial fluids, and animal/human crowds through phase transitions and symmetry breaking. A key contribution is the discovery of “time liquid crystals”: ordered states in living condensed matter with spontaneously rotating alignment directions, exhibiting no equilibrium analogs. This work bridges theoretical physics with potential applications in materials science and biological systems.
