Ana de Almeida

Ana de Almeida is an Associate Professor at the Department of Information Science and Technology, School of Technology and Architecture, ISCTE - Lisbon University Institute, where she also serves as Coordinator of the Software Systems Engineering program and an Integrated Researcher at ISTAR-Iscte. She holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics – Computing from the University of Coimbra and is actively involved in research, teaching, and academic leadership.

Her educational background includes a PhD in Applied Mathematics – Computing from the University of Coimbra.

Ana de Almeida's research focuses on developing intelligent systems grounded in algorithms, machine learning, and evolutionary computation. She specializes in self-tuning models and hybrid strategies for solving multicriteria problems, with applications in public policy, healthcare, and digital governance. Her work emphasizes ethical AI, data science for societal impact, and secure, transparent AI systems. She is particularly interested in applying computational intelligence to real-world challenges in public administration, health, and fraud detection.

Her leadership in research projects reflects a strong trend in applied artificial intelligence and data science, particularly in public administration, healthcare, and digital transformation. These projects demonstrate interdisciplinary collaboration and a focus on innovation with societal impact.

Ana de Almeida advises several doctoral students working on topics such as AI in archaeology, market AI systems, complexity in creative industries, and e-government in developing countries. She has led significant research and innovation projects funded by FCT and public agencies, including AI4PA, AIM Health, IA-INCENTIVOS, and AppSentinel, often in collaboration with industry and government. Her academic leadership includes directing the Master’s and Bachelor’s programs in Data Science at ISCTE.

She is actively involved in research labs and teams such as ISTAR-Iscte, the IA>AP Competence Center, and collaborates with institutions including INESC-ID, IT (Instituto de Telecomunicações), and NOVA IMS. Her work is centered on interdisciplinary teams focusing on AI, data science, and digital innovation.
