Ana Traven is a Research Professor in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at Monash University, affiliated with the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute and the Centre to Impact Antimicrobial Resistance. She holds an ARC Future Fellowship and leads research on fungal pathogens like Candida albicans and Candida auris, focusing on their virulence mechanisms and antifungal drug development. Her work addresses global health challenges posed by antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and fungal infections.
Education: PhD (2002, University of Zagreb, Croatia); postdoctoral training at St. Vincent’s Institute (Melbourne) and Columbia University (NY).
Research interests include fungal pathogenesis, host-pathogen interactions, and metabolic strategies used by pathogens to evade immune responses. Key projects involve metabolic competition between host and pathogen, and immune tolerance mechanisms. She has secured grants from NHMRC and ARC, including leadership in multi-year projects targeting fungal sepsis and drug development.
Notable awards include the Georgina Sweet Award (2018) and AFTAM Collaboration Award (2016). Media engagements highlight her work on superbugs and fungal infection strategies. Active in academic roles, she chairs the Victorian Infection and Immunity Network and organizes international conferences on fungal pathogens.
