Ana Kate Speed is a Visiting Lecturer at Northumbria University’s Faculty of Law and Business, specializing in family law with a focus on domestic abuse and cross-border legal challenges. She holds a PhD by publication (2022) and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Authority. Her work addresses gaps in legal protection for domestic abuse victims, particularly in post-Brexit contexts and international jurisdictions.
Education: BA (Hons) in Sociology (2009, University of Birmingham); Graduate Diploma in Law (Distinction) and Legal Practice Course (Distinction, Northumbria University). Professional qualifications include the Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning and SFHEA status.
Research interests include civil law responses to domestic abuse, legal aid reforms, and cross-border legal frameworks. She co-edited the 2024 Research Handbook on Domestic Violence and Abuse and has published extensively on topics such as protective orders, victim accessibility to legal aid, and post-pandemic family court challenges.
Recognition includes the 2018 ‘Best Pro Bono Activity’ award for her Student Law Office project and finalist status for the Northern Law Awards’ Trainee Solicitor of the Year (2016). Ana supervises clinical students in family law advocacy and leads the International Family Law module.
