Amy Schwartz is an Adjunct Lecturer at Northwestern University’s Segal Design Institute, where she teaches design research and advises students in the MMM Program and Engineering, Design, and Innovation Program. She serves as a Design Researcher in Residence at MATTER, Chicago’s health-tech incubator, and is part of the Chicago Innovation Mentor Network. As a Principal at Empathic Innovation, LLC, she provides consulting services, leveraging her expertise in human-centered design and cognitive psychology.

Her research focuses on applying human-centered design principles to solve complex challenges in healthcare, technology, and public sector innovation. She is renowned for pioneering design research frameworks that bridge creativity with technical rigor, particularly in medical device development and user experience design.
Award highlight: The Lifeport Kidney Transporter, which she co-developed, was recognized with the IDSA Design of the Decade award and is housed in New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
