Amy George-Hirons is Senior Professor of Practice in Spanish & Portuguese and Linguistics at Tulane University's School of Liberal Arts. A Tulane double graduate (B.A. Spanish/Latin American Studies 1995, Ph.D. Latin American Studies 2004), she returned as part of the inaugural cohort of Professors of Practice.
Her research examines 18th-century Yucatec Mayan translations of Spanish astronomical texts and develops service-learning approaches in language pedagogy. As former Director of Basic Language Programs (10 years), she holds ACTFL certification as an Oral Proficiency Rater.
Teaching spans Spanish language instruction, Translation Studies, and Second Language Acquisition methodologies. She maintains community engagement through the Center for Public Service and as Residential Faculty Mentor.
