Clinical Professor Emerita Amy Gardner is affiliated with the University of Maryland’s School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, where she has taught since 1989. A registered architect in DC and Maryland, she is a LEED Accredited Professional and Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. Her work focuses on sustainable design, integrated design education, and advancing renewable energy strategies. She pioneered the Integrated Design Studio curriculum adopted nationally by architecture programs, emphasizing collaboration between students, practitioners, and tradespeople.
Education: Master of Architecture (University of Virginia, 1985); Bachelor of Science in Architecture (University of Virginia, 1981).
Research interests include sustainable architecture, community impact through design, and the historical relationship between construction and architectural meaning. Her leadership in the Solar Decathlon (1st place in 2007 and 2011) and international workshops in Oman highlight her global influence. Projects like the LEED Gold Home and Cordova Farm renovation exemplify her commitment to energy efficiency, passive design strategies, and site-specific solutions.
Recognition includes AIA awards for innovative projects and contributions to sustainable practice. She co-founded Gardner Architects LLC, specializing in sustainable residential design, and advocates for women’s roles in architecture in the Arab world. Her work bridges academia and practice, emphasizing aging-in-place design and stormwater management.
