Indiana University Bloomingtonمعرفی
Amy G. Applegate serves as Clinical Professor of Law and Ralph F. Fuchs Faculty Fellow at Indiana University Maurer School of Law, where she directs the Civil Protection Order Clinic. She teaches Civil Protection Order Clinic (B686), Domestic Relations Mediation (B563), and Family and Children Mediation Clinic (B691), training law students in pro bono legal services for indigent clients.
Her educational background includes:
- Cornell University, B.A. (with distinction), 1978
- Harvard University, J.D. cum laude, 1981
Professor Applegate's research centers on evidence-based interventions for high-conflict families, with particular focus on intimate partner violence screening in mediation settings, development of tools like the Mediator's Assessment of Safety Issues and Concerns (MASIC), and evaluation of shuttle/video-conferencing mediation approaches. Her interdisciplinary work with Psychological and Brain Sciences faculty examines IPV impacts on dispute resolution outcomes and creates safer processes for vulnerable populations through randomized controlled trials.
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications reveals dominant trends in comparative effectiveness research between mediation modalities and litigation for IPV cases, pandemic-era adaptations of online parenting programs, and methodological innovations in screening protocols. Her work consistently bridges legal practice with psychological science to reform family court processes.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Indiana University Trustees' Teaching Award (2012, 2016, 2023)
- Stanley Cohen Distinguished Research Award (2022)
- Leonard D. Fromm Public Interest Faculty Award (2003, 2005, 2020)
- Randall T. Shepard Award for Pro Bono Service (2005)
Through the Civil Protection Order Clinic, she supervises student attorneys handling domestic violence cases while collaborating with psychology researchers on NIH/National Institute of Justice-funded studies. Her leadership extends to editorial roles at Family Court Review and SSRN journals, plus past chairmanship of AALS Clinical Legal Education Section and Kinsey Institute Board of Trustees.
The Civil Protection Order Clinic operates as a multidisciplinary hub where law students, psychologists, and social workers develop trauma-informed interventions for IPV survivors, with recent projects focusing on digital safety protocols and cross-jurisdictional mediation frameworks.
