Amy G Weisman is a Professor and Associate Director of the Adult Division within the Clinical Psychology Faculty at the University of Miami's College of Arts and Sciences. Her work focuses on culturally informed mental health interventions, particularly addressing disparities in schizophrenia treatment, religious/spiritual coping mechanisms, and caregiver burden reduction. She has pioneered family-focused therapies tailored to minority populations and explores intersectional factors like race, religion, and immigration status affecting mental health outcomes.
Research interests prominently feature: (1) Cultural adaptation of psychotherapeutic approaches, (2) Psychosis-related stigma reduction, (3) Religious coping's role in psychiatric symptom management, and (4) Systemic barriers to mental health care access among marginalized groups. Her work emphasizes ethnically diverse populations, including Muslim communities and Black/African American individuals.
Publications consistently highlight culturally specific interventions, demonstrating efficacy in reducing patient symptom severity and improving caregiver outcomes. Recent work explores VR-based therapies for youth pain management and latent creativity profiles in clinical populations.
No scientific awards are listed, though her extensive grant-funded research indicates sustained academic contribution. Ongoing work includes clinical trials validating culturally adapted assessment tools like the Perceived Islamophobia Scale and Spiritual Bypass Scale.
Her lab focuses on translational research bridging cultural psychiatry with clinical practice, with particular attention to faith-based mental health strategies and familial dynamics in severe mental illness management.
