Amy Eisman serves as an Assistant Professor in the Journalism Division at American University's School of Communication, where she previously directed the division from 2018-2023. She teaches journalism ethics, writing, digital content, and entrepreneurship courses including COMM-409 Journalism Ethics, COMM-720 Capstone Seminar in Journalism, and COMM-724 Reporting of Public Affairs for Spring and Fall 2025.
Earning her BA from the University of Pennsylvania and MA from American University, Eisman brings extensive professional experience to her academic role. She spent 17 years at Gannett (including positions at USA TODAY and as Executive Editor of USA WEEKEND), worked as managing editor at AOL, and served as a Fulbright lecturer in Moscow. She has directed multiple academic programs including the MA in Interactive Journalism, MA in Media Entrepreneurship, and the Writing Program.
Her research focuses on digital journalism innovation, with particular expertise in media entrepreneurship, interactive storytelling, and the convergence of gaming with journalism through her co-facilitation of the JoLT program (2015-2017). Eisman has developed significant training resources including co-authoring online training modules for Gannett on breaking news, interactivity, and database journalism for 5,500 employees, and creating materials for the Knight Citizen News Network.
Recognized as one of Washington's 100 Tech Titans by Washingtonian Magazine (2015), Eisman has held leadership roles in professional organizations including co-chairing the 2010 Online News Association conference and founding the MJ Bear Fellowship committee. She has judged the White House Correspondents' Association Awards annually since 2011 and serves on the Power Shift Project advisory board promoting workplace integrity for women in news.
With a global impact, Eisman has conducted workshops worldwide including at washingtonpost.com, Freedom Forum, Voice of America, and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in Prague and Moscow. She presented on digital journalism in Vladivostok, Russia in 2011 and has served on PBS committees reviewing Editorial Standards and Policies, demonstrating her influence across international media landscapes.
