Amy Cooper, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Saint Louis University's College of Arts and Sciences. Her work bridges medical systems, political transformation, and cultural analysis through ethnographic studies in Venezuela, Cuba, and the U.S.
- Education: Ph.D. and M.A. in Anthropology from the University of Chicago; B.S. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University.
Cooper’s research focuses on power dynamics in medical encounters, biomedicine’s colonial legacy, mental health activism, and sociopolitical belonging. Her 2019 book State of Health explores Chavista healthcare reforms, while her upcoming Liberating Medicine (2025) critiques colonial frameworks in global health.
Her publications span topics like therapeutic apprenticeship, Venezuelan health policy, and homelessness, reflecting her interests in medical anthropology, public health equity, and political struggle. Recent work includes co-edited special issues on Medicine Anthropology Theory (2022).
