Dr. Amy Abrams is an Assistant Professor of Animal Science at Berry College, specializing in ruminant microbiology and livestock genetics. She joined Berry in 2019 after completing her B.S. at California State University, Chico (Animal Science), M.S. at University of Wyoming (Rumen Microbiology Focus), and Ph.D. at South Dakota State University (Livestock Genetics Focus).
Her research focuses on the relationship between rumen microbial communities and host animal health/performance, as well as the early development of the rumen microbiome. She also prioritizes enhancing student engagement through innovative teaching methods in courses like Veterinary Microbiology and Genetics of Domestic Animals.
Dr. Abrams oversees an undergraduate research lab where students gain hands-on experience in animal handling, sample collection (rumen fluid, blood, fecal analysis), and molecular techniques such as gas chromatography and bioinformatic analysis. Her work bridges fundamental microbiology research with applied educational strategies.
Professional affiliations include the American Society of Animal Science, North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture, and honor societies Gamma Delta Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi.
