Dr. Amrita Bharat is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. She leads the Mycology and Molecular Enteric AMR division at the National Microbiology Laboratory, focusing on whole genome sequencing of Candida species and gram-negative enteric pathogens to study antimicrobial resistance dissemination.
- NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (2016)
- PhD in Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences, McMaster University (2012)
Her research emphasizes genomic epidemiology of antimicrobial-resistant organisms, mechanisms of drug resistance, and resistance prediction algorithms from genomic data. This work informs national antimicrobial stewardship policies and infection control strategies.
- Dr. Lucie Dutil Memorial Award in Applied Science and Research (PHAC)
Dr. Bharat's laboratory conducts genomic surveillance of Enterobacterales and Candida auris to develop predictive models for resistance patterns. Her cross-appointment with the National Microbiology Laboratory enables translational research applications in healthcare settings.
