Amir Abedi is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Political Science at Western Washington University (WWU). Born and raised in Germany, he holds a degree in History and Political Science from the University of Hanover. After working in government and journalism, he earned his MA and PhD in Political Science from the University of British Columbia. He joined WWU in 2003 and has served as department chair since 2014.
His research focuses on Comparative Politics, European Politics, and Party Systems. Key interests include German unification’s impact on party systems, coalition formation in multi-level governance, and anti-political establishment parties. He has authored numerous publications and presented at international conferences, including works on the German Greens, SNP, and dominant parties in Canada/Australia.
At WWU, Abedi has spearheaded international partnerships, notably a direct exchange program with the University of Duisburg-Essen. He advises Model EU teams and teaches courses on Comparative Politics, Western Europe, and the European Union. He has contributed to university initiatives like Student Learning Outcomes and international program development, serving on committees such as the International Programs Advisory Committee (2005-2008).
Abedi’s work emphasizes cross-temporal and cross-sectional analyses of party systems, with a focus on European integration and political stability. His research bridges theoretical frameworks with empirical studies of institutional constraints and electoral dynamics.
