Professor Amin Abdolvand is the Chair of Functional Materials & Photonics and Associate Dean for Research at the School of Science and Engineering, University of Dundee. He holds a Personal Chair and leads the Materials & Photonics Systems (MAPS) Group, renowned for state-of-the-art laser materials engineering facilities. His research focuses on advanced manufacturing with light, nanomaterial fabrication, surface functionalization, and applied laser technology. Key projects include collaborations with CERN on materials for particle accelerators and development of antibacterial surfaces for medical applications.
- Education & Career:
- Research Scientist, Martin-Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg (2003-2006)
- PD Research Fellow, University of Manchester (2006-2008) and University of Dundee (2008-2010)
- EPSRC Career Acceleration Fellowship (2010-2015)
- Awards: Fellow of the Institute of Physics, Senior Member of OSA.
- Labs & Facilities: MAPS Group, Nano-Materials Research Lab (NMRL), and CERN-linked laser engineering facilities.
His research bridges engineering and physics, addressing challenges in aerospace, energy, and biomedical sectors. Recent work includes hybrid antibacterial surfaces, secondary electron yield reduction in materials for particle accelerators, and low-temperature solar cell inks.
