Amelia Bonea is a Lecturer in the Global History of Science, Technology, and Medicine at the University of Manchester's Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine (CHSTM). She holds a PhD from the University of Heidelberg and MA/Bachelor's degrees from the University of Tokyo. Her research bridges science, technology, and media history, focusing on colonial South Asia, the British Empire, and Japan. Bonea has led projects like 'Media and Epidemics' (funded by CHANSE) and 'Archives of the Earth' (funded by DFG), exploring paleontology and public health communication.
Her academic contributions include monographs such as The News of Empire: Telegraphy, Journalism, and the Politics of Reporting in Colonial India (2016), awarded the 2017 Eugenia M. Palmegiano Prize. She teaches courses on fossils, decolonizing science history, and digital-age power dynamics. Bonea collaborates globally, engaging with institutions in Germany, Poland, Romania, and the UK, and has received fellowships from the German Historical Institute and DFG.
Research interests span telecommunication technologies in public health, women in science, and natural heritage debates. She has organized conferences like the BSHS Digital Festival and leads outreach projects like the 'Being Human Festival: Fossil Stories,' emphasizing public engagement with science history.
