Ambre Dromgoole is an Assistant Professor at the Africana Studies and Research Center of Cornell University, with affiliations in the American Studies Program, Music, and Religious Studies Program. Her research bridges Africana religious studies and Black feminist inquiry, focusing on the interplay between gender, sacred soundings, and musical innovation in Black communities.
- Education: B.A. in Religion and Musical Studies from Oberlin College and Conservatory (2015), M.A. from Yale Divinity School and Institute of Sacred Music (2017), Ph.D. from Yale University (2023).
Her work examines the cultural production of Black women gospel musicians, emphasizing their role in negotiating religious respectability, blues culture, and sexual/social risk. She investigates how their collaborations and intimate bonds form sites of critical religious and feminist analysis.
Dr. Dromgoole’s research has been supported by prestigious institutions such as the Ford Foundation, Louisville Institute, and Center for Material and Visual Cultures of Religion at Yale. She actively engages with communities through collaborations with organizations like the National Museum of African American Music, Nashville Symphony, and Sound Diplomacy.
