Amber Ross is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Florida. Her work bridges philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and the ethical implications of artificial intelligence. She teaches courses including PHI 3681: Ethics, Data, and Technology and PHI 6326: Seminar in Philosophy of Mind.
Dr. Ross earned her PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2013 with her dissertation titled "Inconceivable Minds." Prior to her current position, she held a post-doctoral fellowship at Tufts University's Center for Cognitive Studies (2010-2012).
Her research focuses on the intersection of consciousness, philosophy of mind, and emerging technologies. She has developed a distinctive approach to understanding the ethical implications of opaque AI systems by drawing parallels between laypersons' relationships with human experts and their potential relationships with AI systems. Her work on mental fictionalism challenges conventional views about the nature of mental states, while her research on multisensory perception contributes to philosophical debates about how we experience the world through multiple senses.
Dr. Ross has presented her work at numerous international conferences, including the American Political Science Association Meeting in Montreal, the Mind and Matter conference at the University of Helsinki, and workshops at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Her publications demonstrate a consistent engagement with foundational questions in philosophy of mind while addressing pressing ethical concerns in AI development.
