Amber Hughes is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Newcastle's School of Education, affiliated with the Teachers and Teaching Research Centre (TTRC). She completed her PhD in 2025, focusing on Indigenous mathematics education policy and decolonizing knowledge systems. Her work challenges dominant education policies through critical theory frameworks and emphasizes equity for Indigenous learners.
Her research expertise spans critical mathematics education, Indigenous epistemologies, and policy discourse analysis. She has contributed to high-impact journals and co-authored a book chapter on decolonizing Western-Indigenous dialogues. Current projects include the Thriving Schools initiative, analyzing school improvement in disadvantaged contexts, and collaborative efforts with international scholars like Associate Professor Edward Doolittle.
Amber has led evaluations for programs such as the Reclaiming My Place initiative and managed the 44th MERGA Conference. Her awards include the College of Human and Social Futures Best Publication Prize (2021, 2023) and 3MT finals appearances. She actively participates in global networks like ATSIMA and the Banff International Research Station's Math Bundle project.
