Amber E. Barnato is the John E. Wennberg Distinguished Professor and Director of The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice at the Geisel School of Medicine, Dartmouth. She is also a Professor of Medicine. Her interdisciplinary roles span health policy, clinical practice, and health equity research.
She holds an MD from Harvard Medical School, an MPH in Health Policy and Management from UC Berkeley, an MS in Health Services Research from Stanford University, and a BA in Physiology from UC Berkeley. Her academic journey reflects a deep commitment to improving healthcare systems and patient outcomes.
Her research focuses on end-of-life care, physician communication, and health disparities. She investigates how organizational norms, implicit bias, and patient-provider interactions contribute to inequities in intensive care and life-sustaining treatments for seriously ill older adults. Her methodological expertise includes claims data analysis, qualitative interviewing, simulation studies, and behavioral trials.
Her recent publications (2024–2025) reflect a strong trend toward digital health interventions for caregivers, behavioral nudges in healthcare leadership, racial disparities in cancer care, and innovations in advance care planning. These works span palliative care, oncology, health equity, and implementation science, demonstrating a cohesive and impactful research program.
She has received the Distinguished Mentor Award from the University of Pittsburgh. Her scientific awards include continuous NIH funding since 2003 and leadership on over 25 extramural grants.
She mentors extensively, having guided over 70 pre- and post-doctoral scientists and junior faculty. She leads major educational initiatives including the MPH, MS, MHCDS, and PhD programs at Dartmouth, as well as the Dartmouth Health Equity Research Pathways and the Levy Incubator, which supports healthcare delivery redesign.
She leads the development of the Dartmouth Health Equity Atlas and oversees the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care. She also founded ICUStoryWeb.org, a platform collecting family experiences in ICU decision-making.
