Ambar Basu is a Professor & Department Chair in the Department of Communication at the University of South Florida, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on intersections of culture, communication, and underprivilege in global health contexts. He employs critical ethnography and autoethnography to document narratives from marginalized communities, emphasizing reflexive methodologies and collaborative knowledge production. Dr. Basu serves as Senior Editor for Health Communication and co-edits the Critical Cultural Studies in Global Health Communication book series with Routledge.
His work critiques neoliberal and colonial structures impacting healthcare access, particularly for sex workers, undocumented immigrants, and communities affected by HIV/AIDS. Recent studies examine water access inequities, pandemic vaccination communication, and carcerality in addiction recovery. He has published extensively on post-AIDS discourse, cultural resistance narratives, and structural violence in health communication.
Key contributions include editing Post-AIDS Discourse in Health Communication: Sociocultural Interpretations (2021) and co-authoring over 40 peer-reviewed articles. His research bridges academic scholarship with practical interventions, advocating for participatory approaches in global health initiatives.
