Amaël Arguel

Amaël Arguel is an Associate Professor of Cognitive Psychology and Ergonomics at Université Toulouse - Jean Jaurès, where he is affiliated with the Cognition, Languages, Ergonomics (CLLE) research laboratory. He teaches cognitive psychology, experimental methodology, statistics, epistemology, and ethics and scientific integrity, and serves as Co-head of UE503 (Cognitive Psychology, Year 3).

Dr. Arguel completed his PhD in Cognitive Psychology at the University of Rennes in 2009, then worked in Australia at Macquarie University, University of New South Wales, Science of Learning Research Centre, and University of Technology Sydney before returning to France in 2019.

His research focuses on cognitive processes of complex learning in computer environments, cognitive ergonomics of multimedia interfaces, the role of emotions in learning and decision-making, analysis of learning traces in digital environments (Learning Analytics), and medical informatics and online patient support. His work frequently examines epistemic emotions, particularly confusion, and how they impact learning outcomes in digital environments.

Dr. Arguel has published extensively on topics related to digital learning, with recent work exploring how students evaluate video content, procedural learning in mixed reality environments, and gamification applications in transportation. His research employs both experimental and observational methods to understand how digital environments can be optimized for effective learning.

Among his notable contributions are the development of methods for detecting learners' confusion through activity analytics and eye tracking, and investigations into how emotional states influence complex learning processes.
