Associate Professor Amany Zekry is a Clinical Academic at the St George and Sutherland Clinical School, where she serves as a Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at St George Hospital. Her research focuses on the role of the microbiome in liver disease and cancer, particularly in the context of obesity.
Research Interests: Amany leads a team at the Microbiome Research Centre, investigating how microbiome dysbiosis affects immune/inflammatory responses in liver injury and hepatocellular cancer. Current projects include ex-vivo experiments, animal models, and human interventional studies to manipulate the gut microbiome for therapeutic benefits.
Grants & Collaborations: She received a $3 million grant from the Sir Owen Glenn Foundation (2018-2021) for her work on obesity-related liver diseases. Her research aims to transition to multi-centre clinical trials to assess microbiome impacts on immunotherapy responses for liver cancer.
Supervision: Amany supervises PhD candidates, postdoctoral scientists, and honours students, with keywords spanning hepatocellular cancer, gut microbiome, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
