Amanda Flaim is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Michigan State University, affiliated with James Madison College. She holds a PhD in Development Sociology from Cornell University and an MS from Stanford University. Her research focuses on human rights policy paradoxes, including statelessness, citizenship, human trafficking, and global education rights. Current projects examine trafficking risks among Cambodian/Burmese migrants in Thailand's fishing industry and statelessness impacts in Thailand/Nepal.
Her work combines field-based research with policy engagement, including designing large-scale surveys for UN agencies and NGOs. Prior to MSU, she was a Human Rights Fellow at Duke University, teaching courses on migration, citizenship, and qualitative research methods. Key research themes include legal status effects on health, education, and economic stratification in marginalized populations.
Publications analyze multi-scale trafficking risk factors, land rights racialization in Thailand, and the intersection of legal identity systems with climate displacement. Her work bridges academic scholarship with applied policy interventions in Southeast Asia.
