Amanda Cote is an Associate Professor and Director of the Serious Games Certificate in the Department of Media & Information at Michigan State University. Her research focuses on the video game industry, examining issues such as gender, identity, and representation; game development labor practices (including 'crunch time'); and the cultural and institutional dynamics of collegiate esports.
- Ph.D. in Communication Studies, University of Michigan (2016)
Her work employs qualitative methods like in-depth interviews and discourse analysis. She authored the book Gaming Sexism (2020) and has published in journals including Journal of Communication, New Media & Society, and Games and Culture. Cote's recent studies explore how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted esports programs and the prevalence of race and gender stereotypes in gaming communities.
