Amanda Martinez

Amanda Martinez is an Associate Professor of Communication Studies and Director of the Speaking Center at Davidson College. She holds a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University, an M.A. from the University of Houston, and a B.A. from St. Mary's University.

Her research focuses on media effects and health communication, particularly how entertainment media perpetuates race-based stereotypes and influences real-world interactions. She explores intersectionality, symbolic racism, counter-stereotypes, and stigmatized health issues, with recent publications in journals like Mass Communication & Society and The Howard Journal of Communications.

As an educator, she teaches courses on gendered communication, mass media, intercultural communication, and communication theory. She co-led a massive open online course (MOOC) on 'fake news' through EdX, which garnered global enrollment and media coverage.
