
Amanda Cobb-Greetham

Amanda Cobb-Greetham is the John Shelton Reed Distinguished Professor in Native Southern Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (since 2024). Previously, she held a professorship and chaired the Department of Native American Studies at the University of Oklahoma, leading its elevation to a department and founding the Native Nations Center. She also served the Chickasaw Nation as Administrator of the Division of History and Culture, overseeing the Chickasaw Cultural Center and Chickasaw Press, which earned the Harvard Award for Excellence in Tribal Self-Governance.
Her research focuses on Indigenous identity, cultural preservation, and tribal governance, particularly in Oklahoma. Her current work, Bright, Golden Haze: Oklahoma/Indian Identity in Myth and Memory, examines the contested narratives of Native Americans in American history. Earlier scholarship includes Listening to Our Grandmothers’ Stories: The Bloomfield Academy for Chickasaw Females, awarded the American Book Award, and co-editing The National Museum of the American Indian: Critical Conversations.
Recipient of prestigious awards including the 2023 Guggenheim Fellowship, 2021–2022 Harvard Radcliffe Fellowship, and OU Regents Award for Superior University Service (2023). Honored with the Chickasaw Nation’s Dynamic Woman Award (2018) and induction into the Chickasaw Hall of Fame (2023).
She has held significant editorial roles, including nine years as editor of American Indian Quarterly. Her work has been supported by fellowships such as the Guggenheim and Harvard Radcliffe. She co-founded the Auntie Project, a nonprofit supporting Native women, and led initiatives like the Chickasaw Cultural Center and Native Nations Center.
