Alyson J. Kiesel is the Ruth Maxwell Distinguished Professor of English and Professor of English at Carthage College. She joined the faculty in 2011 and teaches courses on Victorian literature, critical theory, and British literary traditions. Her research focuses on the intersection of Victorian fiction with scientific and natural historical pursuits, including aquarium-keeping, insect collecting, and botanical drawing. She previously held a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at New York University's English Department and contributed to its Core Curriculum.
A graduate of Amherst College (B.A. in English) and New York University (Ph.D. in English Language and Literature), Dr. Kiesel has received a Faculty Research and Development Grant to advance her long-term project on natural history in Victorian literature. Her teaching specialties include Charles Dickens, George Eliot, and senior thesis supervision. She is affiliated with Carthage’s Department of English and maintains an office in LH 309.
