Alyce Mahon is a Senior Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Art History at the University of Cambridge, with a fellowship at Trinity College. She specializes in Surrealism, modern art theory, and the history of erotic art, and has curated major exhibitions on Dorothea Tanning and Leonor Fini. Her work bridges avant-garde studies, feminist art, and curatorial practice.
Education:
- B.A. in History of Art & Architecture and Modern English from Trinity College Dublin
- PhD in Art History from the Courtauld Institute of Art (1999)
Research Interests focus on Surrealism’s political and erotic dimensions, 20th-century avant-garde movements, and intersections between art and sexuality. She has contributed to exhibitions like Dreamers Awake and Silent Partners: Artist and Mannequin, exploring themes of desire and object fetishism.
Teaching includes Part II undergraduate courses on Surrealism’s politics and poetics, core BA papers on art history, and supervising MPhil graduate students. She welcomes PhD inquiries in Dada, Surrealism, and feminist art practices.
Curatorial Work highlights include the first major retrospectives for Dorothea Tanning and Leonor Fini, with roles at institutions like Tate Modern and Centre Pompidou.
