Alvaro Blanco Montes

Álvaro Blanco Montes is a Tenured Scientist (Research Professor) at the Institute of Materials Science (ICMM) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in Madrid, Spain, with over 20 years of professional experience. He previously served as Deputy Director of ICMM-CSIC for nearly four years and actively participates in national and international scientific evaluation panels including ANEP, MICINN, FCT Portugal, EU-ERC, and CONICET.

His research centers on photonics and photonic nanostructures, with seminal contributions including the first near-infrared photonic crystal fabrication during his PhD, development of the first holographic photonic crystal with visible/NIR bandgaps during postdoctoral work, and pioneering studies on disorder in photonic systems. His expertise spans preparation, characterization, and processing of three-dimensional self-assembled structures for advanced optical applications.

Blanco Montes leads the Photonic Crystals Group at ICMM-CSIC, where his work has generated approximately 70 publications (80%+ in Q1 journals) and over 5,000 citations.
