Dr. Alona Furmanchuk serves as a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine (General Internal Medicine) at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She holds key roles as Informatics lead for the NU division of the Chicago Area Patient Centered Outcomes Research Network (CAPriCORN) and contributes to collaborative healthcare AI initiatives. Her institutional affiliations include the Institute for Augmented Intelligence in Medicine and the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (NUCATS).
Her academic credentials comprise a PhD in computational chemistry from Jackson State University (2010) and a Master of Science in Health Services & Outcomes Research (MSHSOR) from Northwestern University (2024). Additional training includes modeling and data mining at Los Alamos National Laboratory and Northwestern University's Department of Engineering and Computer Science.
Dr. Furmanchuk's research centers on integrating artificial intelligence into real-world clinical analytics. Her work spans automatic high-throughput data curation, phenotyping, cohort discovery, population-level disease burden estimation, and novel materials development. She applies computational methods to diverse medical challenges including gastroenterology, trauma care, and transfusion medicine.
Recent publications demonstrate a concentrated focus on AI-driven clinical problem-solving, particularly in cirrhosis management for frail patients, hemodynamic stabilization prediction in trauma, and hospital-level variations in transfusion practices. This reflects her commitment to translating computational innovations into measurable healthcare improvements.
As Informatics lead for CAPriCORN, Dr. Furmanchuk directs data infrastructure for patient-centered outcomes research across the Chicago region. She also maintains active membership in the American Diabetes Association (2022-present) and contributes to Northwestern's AI in Medicine ecosystem through the Rubloff Building research hub at 750 N Lake Shore, Chicago.
