Almudena Escobar López is an Assistant Professor at the School of Image Arts of Toronto Metropolitan University. She holds a Ph.D. in Visual and Cultural Studies from the University of Rochester, an M.A. in Film and Media Preservation from the L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation, and additional degrees in Art History and Japanese Studies. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on documentary and artist’s moving image practices, exploring themes in visual historiography, anthropology, and alternative information ecologies.
As an independent curator and archivist, she has curated film programs and exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as TIFF, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Batalha Centro de Cinema, and the Film Society of Lincoln Center. From 2018 to 2022, she served as Assistant Curator of Media Arts at the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) in Rochester. She co-curated the 67th Flaherty Film Seminar with Sky Hopinka and advised the Art of the Real festival in 2020 and 2022. Her writing has been featured in MoMA Magazine, Walden, MUBI Notebook, and other publications.
Her work bridges academic scholarship, curation, and archival practice, emphasizing experimental narratives and the intersection of visual culture with historical and anthropological inquiry.
