Dr. Allyson Ion is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Child and Youth Studies at Brock University. She holds a MSc in Health Research Methodology and a PhD in Social Work from McMaster University. Her research focuses on critical social work practice, particularly anti-carceral, harm reduction, and anti-racist approaches to child welfare. Dr. Ion emphasizes community engagement, equitable partnerships, and centering the voices of children, youth, and families in healthcare and social service systems.
Education: MSc in Health Research Methodology (McMaster University), PhD in Social Work (McMaster University).
Research interests include harm reduction in child welfare, preparedness for child welfare practice, and anti-oppressive frameworks in social work. Her work intersects with intersectional feminism, anti-colonial methodologies, and participatory action research. Recent publications explore topics like HIV criminalization, maternal health stigma, and cannabis use during pregnancy.
Her collaborative projects include the Stable Homes Strong Families initiative addressing Indigenous health equity and the WATCH study on HIV non-disclosure law. Dr. Ion’s teaching integrates critical theory with applied practice, particularly in child protection contexts.
