Allison Whitney is an Associate Professor of Film and Media Studies in the Department of English at Texas Tech University. Her research examines film technology, feminist methodologies, and genre studies, with specializations in horror, science fiction, and melodrama. A recipient of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies Distinguished Pedagogy Award, she develops innovative approaches to film history education and public scholarship.
Her publications analyze IMAX technology, 3D cinema, and the cultural legacy of space exploration in films like Magnificent Desolation and First Man. She co-founded the Sexism|Cinema project, which combines feminist scholarship with community film programming. Recent work investigates sonic labor in horror films and lunar representation in documentary formats.
Dr. Whitney regularly presents at leading conferences (LSA, IAGS), serves on editorial boards, and directs initiatives to expand Indigenous studies curriculum through NEH-funded projects.
