Allison Thorp is an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Western Carolina University. She leads the Concert Choir, University Chorus, and Chamber Singers, and teaches courses in conducting and choral methods. Her choirs have performed at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall and St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC, showcasing diverse repertoires including early, world, historical, and contemporary music.
She holds a Ph.D. in Choral Music Education from the University of Rochester, an MA in Choral Conducting from Marshall University, and a BME in Music Education from West Virginia Wesleyan College. Her teaching experience includes public school music education in Kentucky and collegiate instruction at the Eastman School of Music and Marshall University.
Her research focuses on social justice in music education and community-building through music. She has presented at conferences such as the ACDA Symposium on Research in Choral Singing, NAfME National Conference, and the College Music Society National Conference. She actively collaborates with regional organizations like the Asheville Lyric Opera and Folkmoot Festival Choir.
Thorp oversees student teachers and community internships in choral music. Her work bridges academic and community engagement, emphasizing inclusive and transformative musical practices.
