Allison McCulloch

Allison McCulloch is a Professor of Mathematics Education and Coordinator of Mathematics Education at the University of North Carolina Charlotte's Department of Mathematics and Statistics. She teaches mathematics education courses for prospective and practicing teachers, with over 25 years of experience in mathematics education, including a decade of middle/high school teaching before transitioning to teacher education in 2007. Her research focuses on secondary mathematics teaching, technology integration, teacher vision development, and systemic educational reforms.

Dr. McCulloch earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Rutgers University (2007), an M.A. in Mathematics from Sam Houston State University (2001), and a B.S. in Mathematics from Purdue University (1992). She has been a key figure in the North Carolina Collaborative for Mathematics Learning (NC2ML) since its inception and has led multiple National Science Foundation-funded projects, including the Preparing to Teach Mathematics with Technology initiative since 2011.

Her work emphasizes designing tools and frameworks to enhance teacher noticing of student thinking in technology-mediated environments, such as the "vending machine applet" for function understanding. She collaborates on projects to create statewide alignment of mathematics instruction standards and develops resources like Exploring Math with Technology for secondary teachers. McCulloch’s research bridges theory and practice, addressing how technology can transform teaching and learning while fostering systemic coherence in mathematics education.

Her recent publications explore teacher preparation, technology integration effectiveness, and frameworks for assessing instructional quality. She has co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and funded projects that focus on teacher education, curriculum design, and educational equity through technology.
