Allison Deutsch

Dr. Allison Deutsch is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow and Lecturer in the Department of History of Art at Birkbeck, University of London. She specializes in 19th-century French painting and material culture, with a focus on the intersections of art, gender, and colonialism. Deutsch holds a PhD from University College London (2016) and a BA from Williams College (2011). Her research explores how colonial anxieties and culinary metaphors shaped the reception of Impressionist art, particularly through gendered and racialized critiques.

Key academic roles include her current position at Birkbeck and prior roles as an Associate Lecturer at The Courtauld Institute of Art and Teaching Fellow at UCL.
