Allen Orville

Allen Orville serves as the Principal Scientist and group leader of the UK XFEL Hub at Diamond Light Source, joining in October 2015 after tenure at Brookhaven National Laboratory and an Assistant Professorship at Georgia Institute of Technology.

Education:

• BS and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis/St. Paul)
• Post-doctoral training with Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Oregon (Eugene, OR)

Research Interests:

Dr. Orville pioneers time-resolved structural biology, focusing on macromolecular crystallography and serial crystallography at synchrotrons and XFELs. His work integrates microspectroscopy with X-ray diffraction to capture enzymatic reactions in real-time, developing novel methods such as acoustic injection systems for time-resolved studies at facilities worldwide. This research aims to produce atomic-resolution movies of macromolecules during catalysis.
