Allen McCoy serves as Professor of Theatre, Artistic Director of Theatre, and Chair of the Theatre and Cinema Arts Department at Palm Beach Atlantic University's College of the Arts. With over 30 years of professional experience in the theatre industry, he brings extensive practical knowledge to his academic role which he has held since joining the institution in 2012.
His educational background includes:
- MFA in Theatre from University of Central Florida
- BFA in Art from Wayne State University
Professor McCoy's research and professional interests span the full spectrum of theatrical production, with particular emphasis on performance techniques, directing methodologies, and stage combat. His practical experience informs his teaching approach, creating a bridge between academic theory and professional practice in the performing arts.
With a career spanning more than three decades, McCoy has established himself as a significant figure in American regional theatre. His leadership extends beyond the classroom to active direction of productions and administration of theatre programs, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the theatrical ecosystem from performance to production management.
Professor McCoy's professional journey includes significant leadership roles across multiple theatre institutions. Prior to his position at Palm Beach Atlantic, he taught at Seminole State College and the University of Central Florida. His industry experience includes serving as Artistic Director for Circle Theatre Company in Orlando and Timestep Players in Chicago, as well as Director of Education for both the North Carolina Theatre and Ocala Civic Theatre.
His professional practice encompasses all aspects of theatrical production, having directed over 40 productions while also serving as production manager, fight choreographer, and movement coach for numerous other theatrical works. As a member of Actors' Equity Association, he has held acting contracts with prestigious institutions including Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, The Court Theatre, Indiana Repertory, Drury Lane Theatre, and others.
