Allen MacDuffie

Allen MacDuffie is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Texas at Austin, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2006. His research and teaching focus on Victorian and modernist literature, ecocriticism, and television/media studies, with an emphasis on intersections between literature, energy, and climate change during the long nineteenth century.

His scholarly work has appeared in prestigious journals such as PMLA, Representations, ELH, Victorian Studies, and Cultural Critique. In 2024, he published his second book, Climate of Denial: Darwin, Climate Change, and the Literature of the Long Nineteenth Century, which explores how post-Darwinian literature grapples with cataclysmic change.

• His first book, Victorian Literature, Energy, and the Ecological Imagination, was awarded the 2014 Sonya Rudikoff Prize.
• He co-edits Texas Studies in Literature and Language with Hannah Wojciehowski.

Allen MacDuffie teaches courses ranging from Victorian literature to modernism and interdisciplinary topics like literature and biology. His recent courses include E 343L: Modernism and Literature (Spring 2025) and E 392M: Race/Empire/Ecology in 19th-Century British Literature (Fall 2023). He has also been featured in an interview on the History of Literature podcast discussing his research on Darwin and climate change.
