Professor Allan Young holds the Chair of Mood Disorders and directs the Centre for Affective Disorders at King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. He also serves as Vice Dean Academic Psychiatry and leads the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre’s Translational Therapeutics Cluster. His career includes academic roles at Oxford University, Newcastle University, the University of British Columbia, and Imperial College London. He holds dual expertise in clinical psychiatry and research, with a focus on mood disorders, bipolar disorder, and psychopharmacology.
Education: MB ChB in Medicine (University of Edinburgh, 1984), MPhil (1990), PhD in Psychiatry (1996). Professional licenses include General Medical Council registration and certifications in psychiatry.
Research focuses on understanding the causes and treatments of severe psychiatric illnesses, particularly mood disorders. Key areas include genetic studies, clinical trial design, and neurobiological mechanisms. He has published over 600 peer-reviewed papers and serves on editorial boards for journals like the Journal of Psychopharmacology and Molecular Psychiatry.
Honors include Fellowships from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Royal College of Physicians of Canada, and Royal Society of Biology, plus recognition as a 2021 Highly Cited Researcher. He leads major studies on therapies like esketamine for treatment-resistant depression and psilocybin in mental health.
Current roles include trustee of Bipolar UK and the Drug Safety Research Unit. His labs and teams focus on translational research bridging genetic, neuroimaging, and clinical studies in affective disorders.
