Allan Vestal is the Dwight D. Opperman Distinguished Professor of Law at Drake University’s Drake Law School. He has held significant academic leadership roles, including serving as Dean of Drake Law School from 2009 to 2014 and previously as Dean at the University of Kentucky College of Law. Before that, he was a professor and associate dean at Washington & Lee University School of Law. His expertise spans Contracts, Business Associations, and Legal History. Vestal holds a JD from Yale Law School (magna cum laude) and a BA from Yale University (Phi Beta Kappa).
His research focuses on constitutional religious liberty guarantees, state constitution modernization, and business law reforms. Notable works include analyses of the Northwest Ordinance’s impact on religious freedom and landmark cases like Varnum v. Brien. He has been honored with the Kentucky Justice Association Consumer Safety Award (2008), a National Association of Secretaries of State Medallion (2007), and multiple Distinguished Professor Awards from Phi Delta Phi.
Professionally, he practiced law specializing in business transactions, regulated industries, and civil litigation before entering academia. His contributions to legal education include pioneering courses on partnership law and LLC reforms. He advocates for ethical rigor in business law and constitutional fidelity in state governance structures.
