Allan Hruska is a Lecturer in Sustainability and Development at the University of Michigan (U-M), affiliated with the Sustainable Food Systems Initiative. With over 30 years of global experience, he has held leadership roles at universities, the United Nations (FAO), NGOs, and funding organizations such as USAID. He has lived and worked in eight countries, leading major programs including the founding of Global IDEAS at Michigan State University and the FAO’s Global Program on Fall Armyworm.
His work focuses on enhancing food systems' resilience, equity, and sustainability. Notably, he developed strategies to combat the fall armyworm pest, threatening food security in Africa and Asia. Allan has published over 40 peer-reviewed works, secured $75 million in external funding, and taught at institutions like Zamorano University (Honduras), the Universidad Nacional Agraria (Nicaragua), and North Carolina State University.
Currently, he collaborates with NGOs and universities in the Global South to promote accessible pest-control tactics for smallholder maize farmers, emphasizing soil-based solutions. His research integrates evidence-based policies to address global agricultural challenges.
